ABOUT THIS PIECE
A genuinely rare piece. This is Yazd weaving at a fineness the type almost never achieved, measured in our analysis at around 650,000 knots per square metre, executed in lustrous kork wool with a pile unusually generous for so fine a weave.
Yazd, an ancient textile city on the caravan routes, wove its finest rugs squarely within the Kerman tradition through the first half of the twentieth century. The trade of that era grouped the two together, and the designation Yazd-Kerman is still how auction houses catalogue the best of this production today. This rug shows why. An elongated lobed medallion with pendants floats in open ivory space with the discipline of negative space the Ravar masters made famous, framed by a saffron gold border and the arrow-motif secondary border that marks it as Yazd work rather than Kerman proper.
It was woven around the 1940s on a cotton foundation. The age of that foundation required the fringes to be conservatively shortened, while the pile itself remains pristine, the profile of a rug treasured for eighty years rather than used. Our dye analysis found the transitional palette characteristic of the period, with early chrome yellows alongside traditional indigo-based blues and greens, consistent with the 1940s dating. At 220 x 150 cm it is a versatile size for a bedroom, study or sitting room, and of everything on our floor it is the piece that rewards the closest look: master-workshop refinement under a modest name.

SPECIFICATIONS
How it sits in your room.
220 × 145 CM (7'3" × 4'9"), DRAWN TO SCALE WITH TYPICAL AUSTRALIAN FURNITURE SIZES.
About the length of a 3-seater sofa, so it sits just in front of it with the coffee table on it. Floated like this it reads as a deliberate island rather than a rug that came up short.
Only 33 cm of rug would show beyond even a four-seat table, so the chairs would sit off it. This one belongs in a living room or bedroom.
Only 34 cm of rug would show either side of a queen bed. It works, but 45 cm or more looks settled. At the foot of the bed it suits well.
Measure the room, or just the area the rug should cover, and we will draw this rug in it to scale.
