Rug size guide.

Get the size right and the furniture settles into place around it. Pick a size below to see it drawn to scale under a sofa, a dining table and a bed, or measure your own room and see it there.

A 3-seater sofa along the long side with its front legs on the rug and 40 cm of rug past each arm, a coffee table on the rug. It is not deep enough for armchairs opposite as well.

A 120 × 80 cm table with 60 cm of rug beyond its sides and 90 cm past its ends, so the chairs stay on the rug when they are pulled out.

YOUR ROOM

Measure the room, or just the area the rug should cover, and we will draw this rug in it to scale.

01

Living room

The rug should hold the furniture together, not float in front of it. Put the front legs of the sofa and any armchairs on the rug and the coffee table fully on it. That ties the group into one setting.

For a three-seater that usually means about 300 × 200 cm. A four-seater, a sectional or a sofa with chairs opposite wants 350 × 250 cm or larger. If the rug is shorter than the sofa, lay it just in front with the coffee table on it: it reads as a deliberate island.

02

Dining room

Allow 60 cm of rug beyond every edge of the table, so a chair pulled out stays on the rug and does not catch the edge. A four-seat table suits about 250 × 200 cm, six seats about 300 × 210 cm, and eight seats 360 × 220 cm or more.

A round table wants a round or square rug at least 120 cm wider than the table. A short pile or a flatweave is easier under chairs than a deep one.

03

Bedroom

Lay the rug across the lower part of the bed, starting just below the bedside tables, with at least 45 cm showing on each side so your feet land on it. That is about 250 × 170 cm for a queen and 280 × 200 cm for a king.

In a smaller room, a pair of runners either side of the bed or one rug across the foot does the same job for less floor.

04

Hallways and runners

Leave 15 to 30 cm of floor along each side of a runner and some floor at both ends. A hallway 110 cm wide suits a runner of about 70 to 90 cm. Measure past any door that opens over the runner: a thick pile can catch it.

05

Measure first

Mark the size on the floor with painter’s tape before you choose. Handmade rugs vary a little from piece to piece, so every rug on this site is listed at its own measured size, and each one shows this same drawing under “Size and fit”.

Browse by size: small, medium, large, extra large and runners.
