Rug underlay, cut to size.
Underlay cut to the exact dimensions of your rug, so it stays put on the floor, feels softer underfoot and wears more slowly. Nothing shows at the border.
Stays in place
Underlay stops a rug creeping across timber, tiles and polished concrete, and keeps the corners from rucking up where people walk.
Softer underfoot
A layer between rug and floor softens the tread, which you notice most with a fine, thin pile or a flatweave.
Less wear
Without underlay the back of the rug rubs against a hard floor with every step. The underlay takes that friction, and the rug lasts longer for it.
Cut to the rug
Each piece is cut to your rug’s exact dimensions, so the edges sit flat and nothing shows at the border.
Two underlays
Dual Lock, a dense non-slip felt with a light grip on both faces, holds a rug on timber, tile, polished concrete and carpet. A plain felt underlay is there when you want more cushioning underfoot.

FREQUENTLY ASKED
Does my rug need underlay?
On a hard floor, almost always. Underlay stops the rug slipping, softens the tread and reduces wear on the back of the rug. Kilims and other flatweaves benefit most: they are light and thin, and slide easily on a hard floor.
How much does rug underlay cost?
Underlay is $49 per square metre. For a 2 x 3 m rug, that is 6 square metres, so $294. A 0.8 x 3 m runner takes 2.4 square metres, so $117.60.
What size should the underlay be?
We cut it to the exact dimensions of your rug, so the edges sit flat and nothing shows at the border.
Will underlay suit my floor?
Dual Lock grips timber, tile, polished concrete and carpet, and can go over underfloor heating as long as you lift it every six months. Stone, tile and concrete need to be properly sealed and cured before any underlay goes down. Tell us your floor and we will advise before we cut.
Which underlay should I choose?
For most rugs, Dual Lock: it stops the rug moving on hard floors and on carpet. Choose felt when the priority is a softer feel underfoot. Tell us about the rug and the room and we will recommend one.
How do I look after a rug and its underlay?
Every few months, lift the rug and underlay together and vacuum the floor underneath, so grit does not build up between them. Turn the rug every six months so it wears evenly.
