ABOUT THIS PIECE
Qum came late to Persian weaving and compensated with fineness, building its reputation on precisely the grade of work this rug represents. Across an ivory field, a powder blue medallion with pendants sits within camel spandrels joined by blue strapwork, the whole drawn in the Shah Abbas floral vocabulary with soft pinks, mustard golds and pale blues. It is a palette that suits contemporary Australian interiors unusually well.
The weave is the point. Hand counted across three separate sections and corroborated by our photographic analysis, the density runs at approximately 450,000 knots per square metre, evenly woven throughout, on a cotton foundation with the blue-grey wefts characteristic of the finest central Persian workshops. Around 1.3 million hand-tied knots in all. Dye saturation is identical on front and back, the pile is full and uniform, and the fringes and selvedges are original. The rug has been washed and presents beautifully.
At 200 x 148 cm this is a classic dozar, the most versatile of Persian formats, equally at home under a coffee table, beside a bed or in a study. A fine mid-century Qum in this state of preservation is an increasingly hard thing to find at this price.

SPECIFICATIONS
How it sits in your room.
200 × 148 CM (6'7" × 4'10"), DRAWN TO SCALE WITH TYPICAL AUSTRALIAN FURNITURE SIZES.
About the length of a 3-seater sofa, so it sits just in front of it with the coffee table on it. Floated like this it reads as a deliberate island rather than a rug that came up short.
Only 34 cm of rug would show beyond even a four-seat table, so the chairs would sit off it. This one belongs in a living room or bedroom.
Only 24 cm of rug would show either side of a queen bed. It works, but 45 cm or more looks settled. At the foot of the bed it suits well.
Measure the room, or just the area the rug should cover, and we will draw this rug in it to scale.
