ABOUT THIS PIECE
Handwoven by Qashqai nomads of southwestern Persia.
Qashqai nomadic rugs are unique one of a kind pieces of art handwoven through a combination of improvisation and reference to folk iconography. Handwoven on horizontal looms, Qashqai Kilims are made from sustainably sourced local handspun wool and natural dyes, nomadic carpets rugs often depict an aerial view abstraction of the weaver’s pastoral nomadic life, featuring many animals, people and plants and fields.
Qashqai weaving techniques and more generally the weaving traditions of Fars, are registered as world intangible heritage by Unesco.
Kilims are a terrific type of rug that is usually made from wool which is interwoven rather than knotted; this means that the surface is ‘flat’ instead of having a ‘pile’. Kilims exhibit some of the most original and unique designs within Persian rugs, with simple fields of colours, geometric shapes and symbols and motifs of flora and fauna. With their minimal design elements, they are perfectly suited for various interiors.
SPECIFICATIONS
How it sits in your room.
243 × 130 CM (8' × 4'3"), DRAWN TO SCALE WITH TYPICAL AUSTRALIAN FURNITURE SIZES.
Long enough for a 3-seater sofa but not deep enough to reach under its front legs as well as hold the coffee table, so it sits just in front with the table on it. Floated like this it reads as a deliberate island.
Only 25 cm of rug would show beyond even a four-seat table, so the chairs would sit off it. This one belongs in a living room or bedroom.
Under the lower part of a queen bed with 45 cm of rug showing on each side, so your feet land on it either side of the bed.
Measure the room, or just the area the rug should cover, and we will draw this rug in it to scale.
