ABOUT THIS PIECE
Handwoven by Qashqai nomads of southwestern Persia.
The Lion Medallion is a distinctive and deeply personal form of the Qashqai kilim rug, embodying the courage, nobility, and heroism of the men within the Qashqai tribe. Unlike mass-produced ones, these rugs are imbued with intimate significance, often crafted by young women as part of their dowry or by female family members as an expression of love and admiration for their cherished ones. Each rug is a one-of-a-kind creation, as the weaver draws inspiration from her emotions and surroundings, weaving her feelings into the fabric. As a result, every Lion Medallion rug serves as a unique, emotional tapestry, capturing the essence of the weaver’s heart and spirit.
Qashqai nomadic rugs are unique one of a kind pieces of art handwoven through a combination of improvisation and reference to folk iconography. Handwoven on horizontal looms, Qashqai Kilims are made from sustainably sourced local handspun wool and natural dyes, nomadic carpets rugs often depict an aerial view abstraction of the weaver’s pastoral nomadic life, featuring many animals, people and plants and fields.
Qashqai weaving techniques and more generally the weaving traditions of Fars, are registered as world intangible heritage by Unesco.
Kilims are a terrific type of rug that is usually made from wool which is interwoven rather than knotted; this means that the surface is ‘flat’ instead of having a ‘pile’. Kilims exhibit some of the most original and unique designs within Persian rugs, with simple fields of colours, geometric shapes and symbols and motifs of flora and fauna. With their minimal design elements, they are perfectly suited for various interiors.
SPECIFICATIONS
How it sits in your room.
173 × 108 CM (5'8" × 3'7"), DRAWN TO SCALE WITH TYPICAL AUSTRALIAN FURNITURE SIZES.
Small beside a 3-seater sofa. It suits a reading corner, under an armchair or across an entry better than a sofa setting.
Only 14 cm of rug would show beyond even a four-seat table, so the chairs would sit off it. This one belongs in a living room or bedroom.
Narrower than a queen bed, so it sits across the foot of the bed, tucked 20 cm under. A pair of runners either side is the other way to dress a bed this size.
Measure the room, or just the area the rug should cover, and we will draw this rug in it to scale.
