ABOUT THIS PIECE
Handwoven by Qashqai nomads of southwestern Persia. A vibrant Persian rug that distils the restless spirit of the Qashqai confederation into a crisp tribal flatweave. Eight linked diamonds step down a madder-red field, their hooked outlines picked out in ivory and indigo, while pumpkin-orange and walnut-brown accents pulse like embers. The ivory inner border, studded with octagonal guls, gives way to a flame-orange meander and a charcoal-cream reciprocal edge, finishing in a soft, woollen fringe. Colour saturation, design regularity and a weft count of c. 23 per inch point to -1960s–70s cooperative weaving rather than earlier village work. Visual inspection suggests madder-based reds, walnut browns and indigo blues; the bright tangerine may include early chrome orange, yet displays pleasing abrash. Supple handle make it ideal beneath a coffee table, in a reading nook or layered over timber floors.
Qashqai weaving techniques and more generally the weaving traditions of Fars, are registered as world intangible heritage by Unesco.
SPECIFICATIONS
How it sits in your room.
267 × 155 CM (8'9" × 5'1"), DRAWN TO SCALE WITH TYPICAL AUSTRALIAN FURNITURE SIZES.
Long enough for a 3-seater sofa but not deep enough to reach under its front legs as well as hold the coffee table, so it sits just in front with the table on it. Floated like this it reads as a deliberate island.
The chairs sit on the rug at the table, but with 38 cm of rug beyond the table their back legs catch the edge when pulled out. 60 cm is the comfortable margin.
Under the lower part of a queen bed with 57 cm of rug showing on each side, so your feet land on it either side of the bed.
Measure the room, or just the area the rug should cover, and we will draw this rug in it to scale.
