Qashqai Shesh Boluki Triple Medallion Persian Rug, c. 1960s
ABOUT THIS PIECE
This is the Qashqai medallion formula at its most confident. A serrated lozenge in deep crimson carries a pole of three hooked medallions, navy and ivory in turn, each with its own rosette heart, while the navy spandrels light up with ivory sunburst rosettes and flowering shrubs. Birds and hens stroll through the field the way they always do in the best Fars weaving, drawn freehand between the flowers, and a full suite of narrow borders frames the whole with a flowering vine.
It was woven around the 1960s by Qashqai weavers of Fars province in the Shesh Boluki design tradition, hand-knotted in wool on a wool foundation with the salmon-red wefting that marks the confederation’s work. Our dye analysis found the crimson field banding in proper madder fashion, lot by lot across the weaving, with deep stable indigo and undyed ivory wool. The pile is full and even, and the ends are complete with their original kilim strips and braided fringes, a state of preservation this type rarely keeps.
At 268 x 177 cm it is a versatile compact room size, generous enough to anchor a living space and forgiving enough for real family life. Qashqai rugs of this completeness and colour are the dependable heart of tribal collecting, and this one wears its sixty years lightly.
