ABOUT THIS PIECE
A vibrant vintage tribal rug from the Darrehshuri subclan of the Qashqai Confederation, woven circa 1950s. The field presents a continuous lattice of six hooked hexagon medallions, each enclosing varied floral and geometric motifs, unified by a rich, saturated orange ground.
This saturated sunset palette blends early chrome-based orange and lavender dyes with traditional vegetal tones (indigo blue, pistachio green, soft walnut brown), reflecting the transitional dyeing practices of the early post-war period.
The piece features a wool-on-wool foundation, single-wefted construction, and tightly packed symmetrical knots (~90–100 kpsi), consistent with Darrehshuri weavings aimed at mid-century export markets. Side cords are fully intact, and the lustrous highland wool pile remains in excellent condition.
Ideal for collectors or designers seeking authentic tribal expression with mid-century material character.
Qashqai weaving techniques and more generally the weaving traditions of Fars, are registered as world intangible heritage by Unesco.
SPECIFICATIONS
How it sits in your room.
239 × 156 CM (7'10" × 5'1"), DRAWN TO SCALE WITH TYPICAL AUSTRALIAN FURNITURE SIZES.
About the length of a 3-seater sofa, so it sits just in front of it with the coffee table on it. Floated like this it reads as a deliberate island rather than a rug that came up short.
The chairs sit on the rug at the table, but with 38 cm of rug beyond the table their back legs catch the edge when pulled out. 60 cm is the comfortable margin.
Under the lower part of a double bed with 51 cm of rug showing on each side, so your feet land on it either side of the bed.
Measure the room, or just the area the rug should cover, and we will draw this rug in it to scale.
