ABOUT THIS PIECE
Handwoven by Qashqai nomads of southwestern Persia.
This handwoven Persian carpet, attributed to the Darrehshuri nomads of the Qashqai confederation, was produced between 1920 and 1940. The field presents an ivory ground densely arranged with stylised flowering shrubs in madder red, indigo, ochre, and soft teal, surrounding a sharply defined hexagonal central medallion with quarter medallions in each corner. The warp is ivory wool, while the wefts alternate between red and ivory wool passes, a distinctive Darrehshuri structural trait. The pleasing palette are natural dyes, with vibrant madder reds, plant-derived yellows, and indigo blues showing gentle abrash. Recently washed, shorn, and stretched, the rug is in excellent condition and ready for display. It embodies the disciplined drawing and rich colour harmony characteristic of the finest early 20th-century Qashqai weaving.
Qashqai weaving techniques and more generally the weaving traditions of Fars, are registered as world intangible heritage by Unesco.
