ABOUT THIS PIECE

Handwoven by the Qashqai nomads of southwestern Persia.

The Stone Lion Gabbeh is derived from an old tradition among the southwestern tribes of Persia, who used lion statues as soul guardians for the tombstones of their deceased luminaries. It also represents the bravery and chivalry of the deceased throughout his lifetime. According to folklore, when a stone lion rug spreads in a tent, it protects the family against enemies.

Traditionally woven for the weavers’ own use as a thick floor covering for winter months or as sleeping rugs, Gabbehs are unique one of a kind pieces of art handwoven by nomads of the Zagros mountains. Gabbehs exhibit some of the most original and unique designs within Persian rugs, with simple fields of colours, checkered designs and symbols and motifs of flora and fauna. With their minimal design elements, they are perfectly suited for modern interiors. Additionally, they can be easily incorporated into most eclectic decorating schemes and work well with traditional Persian carpets. Most of the recent Gabbehs are filled with colour with the weaver’s creativity being given free rein. The beauty of these rugs is their unmistakable uniqueness.

Handwoven, usually by women, on horizontal looms, Gabbehs are made from sustainably sourced local handspun wool and natural dyes and feature a thick, soft, lustrous pile.

Gabbehs and more generally the weaving traditions of Fars region are registered by UNESCO as a part of world intangible heritages.
