ABOUT THIS PIECE
Handwoven by Qashqai nomads of southwestern Persia.
Traditionally woven for the weavers’ own use as a thick floor covering for winter months or as sleeping rugs, Gabbehs are unique one of a kind pieces of art handwoven by nomads of the Zagros mountains.
The Lion Medallion is a distinctive and deeply personal form of the Qashqai rugs, embodying the courage, nobility, and heroism of the men within the Qashqai tribe. Unlike mass-produced ones, these rugs are imbued with intimate significance, often crafted by young women as part of their dowry or by female family members as an expression of love and admiration for their cherished ones. Each rug is a one-of-a-kind creation, as the weaver draws inspiration from her emotions and surroundings, weaving her feelings into the fabric. As a result, every Lion Medallion rug serves as a unique, emotional tapestry, capturing the essence of the weaver’s heart and spirit.
Gabbehs exhibit some of the most original and unique designs within Persian rugs, with simple fields of colours, checkered designs and symbols and motifs of flora and fauna. With their minimal design elements, they are perfectly suited for modern interiors. Additionally, they can be easily incorporated into most eclectic decorating schemes and work well with traditional Persian carpets. Most of the recent Gabbehs are filled with colour with the weaver’s creativity being given free rein. The beauty of these rugs is their unmistakable uniqueness.
Handwoven, usually by women, on horizontal looms, Gabbehs are made from sustainably sourced local handspun wool and natural dyes and feature a thick, soft, lustrous pile.
SPECIFICATIONS
How it sits in your room.
179 × 102 CM (5'10" × 3'4"), DRAWN TO SCALE WITH TYPICAL AUSTRALIAN FURNITURE SIZES.
Small beside a 3-seater sofa. It suits a reading corner, under an armchair or across an entry better than a sofa setting.
Only 11 cm of rug would show beyond even a four-seat table, so the chairs would sit off it. This one belongs in a living room or bedroom.
Narrower than a queen bed, so it sits across the foot of the bed, tucked 20 cm under. A pair of runners either side is the other way to dress a bed this size.
Measure the room, or just the area the rug should cover, and we will draw this rug in it to scale.
