ABOUT THIS PIECE
A finely woven Bakhtiari rug from western Iran, dating to the mid-20th century, featuring a crisp ivory ground medallion anchored on a midnight blue field. The design is articulated with dense floral sprays, angular arabesques, and structured latticework. Its central lozenge medallion is echoed by corner spandrels in deep navy, enhancing the symmetry and visual gravity of the composition.
The border is framed by a continuous scrolling palmette and serrated leaf pattern, drawing on classical Persian forms. Colours include saturated but very stable madder red, golden ochre, soft celadon greens, and deep indig all derived from natural dyes.
With a high knot density, a soft handle, and full pile condition, this piece reflects the precision and refinement of workshop Bakhtiari weaving during its mid century apex.
SPECIFICATIONS
How it sits in your room.
255 × 164 CM (8'4" × 5'5"), DRAWN TO SCALE WITH TYPICAL AUSTRALIAN FURNITURE SIZES.
Long enough for a 3-seater sofa but not deep enough to reach under its front legs as well as hold the coffee table, so it sits just in front with the table on it. Floated like this it reads as a deliberate island.
The chairs sit on the rug at the table, but with 42 cm of rug beyond the table their back legs catch the edge when pulled out. 60 cm is the comfortable margin.
Under the lower part of a queen bed with 51 cm of rug showing on each side, so your feet land on it either side of the bed.
Measure the room, or just the area the rug should cover, and we will draw this rug in it to scale.
