ABOUT THIS PIECE
This finely knotted Bakhtiari carpet from the Chahar Mahal weaving district exemplifies the precision and artistry of mid-20th century Persian village workshops. Measuring 304 × 212 cm, it features a stepped octagonal central medallion in soft emerald green, framed by an ivory field and anchored within a deep indigo ground. The design is enriched with stylised shrubs, rosettes, and angular palmettes, each outlined in a warm madder red. Woven with wool pile on a cotton foundation using a single-wefted, symmetrical knot structure, the weave reaches an impressive 45 Raj (≈ 272 KPSI), marking it as an unusually fine example for the type. Colours appear naturally dyed on visual analysis, with indigo blues, madder reds, plant-derived yellow, and over-dyed greens showing soft abrash. In excellent condition with full pile and secure ends, this piece brings refined craftsmanship and bold geometry to contemporary interiors.
The region of Chahar Mahal on the slopes of Mount Zardkuh is famous for producing some of the most unique and hardy village carpets of Persia. Featuring a unique combination of geometric village motifs and elaborate floral designs inspired by motifs of nearby Isfahan, Chahar Mahal rugs are made from sustainably sourced local handspun wool and natural dyes and are famous for their character and individuality.
