ABOUT THIS PIECE
A vintage Hamadan Persian rug, woven by Armenian weavers in the mid-20th century and hand-knotted in wool on cotton, with a navy medallion on a red field.
A navy medallion with a gold centre sits on an open madder-red field, filled with blossoms in ivory, gold, rose and soft green, with pendants above and below. Sprays of flowers reach in from each end, and a deep aubergine border carries an ivory vine of blossoms between narrow ivory guards.
Armenian weavers in the villages of western Persia have their own place in Persian rug making, and their rugs are known in Iran as Armani-baf. This one is finely woven for the Hamadan region, which keeps its floral drawing crisp.
The pile is full and even across the whole rug, the selvedges are the ones it was woven with, the ends have been resecured, and it has never needed repair.
At 162 by 104cm it suits an entrance, a bedside or a study. View it in our Richmond gallery, or explore more vintage Persian rugs.
SPECIFICATIONS
How it sits in your room.
162 × 104 CM (5'4" × 3'5"), DRAWN TO SCALE WITH TYPICAL AUSTRALIAN FURNITURE SIZES.
Small beside a 3-seater sofa. It suits a reading corner, under an armchair or across an entry better than a sofa setting.
Only 12 cm of rug would show beyond even a four-seat table, so the chairs would sit off it. This one belongs in a living room or bedroom.
Narrower than a queen bed, so it sits across the foot of the bed, tucked 20 cm under. A pair of runners either side is the other way to dress a bed this size.
Measure the room, or just the area the rug should cover, and we will draw this rug in it to scale.
