ABOUT THIS PIECE
A lively Shanei, or “combs,” design marches across this Qashqai kilim in even horizontal bands. Handspun wool warp and weft give the cloth a supple handle, while natural dyes deliver saturated indigo, brick madder, soft apricot, mustard, ivory and small notes of green. The bow-tie cartouches and stepped diamonds repeat with disciplined regularity, a hallmark of production from the late twentieth century. Slit tapestry joins are neat and tight, producing crisp edges and a clean graphic read. Mild abrash in the blues and oranges adds depth without breaking the orderly rhythm. This Persian rug sits comfortably in contemporary rooms, yet it speaks clearly of tribal grammar from Fars. For designers and collectors seeking an authentic handwoven Persian carpet with natural dyes and a versatile palette, it is an easy placement on timber, concrete or sisal and strong enough for daily use.
SPECIFICATIONS
How it sits in your room.
275 × 134 CM (9' × 4'5"), DRAWN TO SCALE WITH TYPICAL AUSTRALIAN FURNITURE SIZES.
Long enough for a 3-seater sofa but not deep enough to reach under its front legs as well as hold the coffee table, so it sits just in front with the table on it. Floated like this it reads as a deliberate island.
Only 27 cm of rug would show beyond even a four-seat table, so the chairs would sit off it. This one belongs in a living room or bedroom.
Under the lower part of a king bed with 46 cm of rug showing on each side, so your feet land on it either side of the bed.
Measure the room, or just the area the rug should cover, and we will draw this rug in it to scale.
