ABOUT THIS PIECE
An antique Taleghan Persian rug from north-west Persia, hand-knotted between 1900 and 1930 in wool on cotton, with two mirrored trees of life meeting at an eye on a near-black field.
Two trees rise from the ends of the field and meet at the centre, each a leafy stem hung with blossom and flanked by smaller flowering shrubs, with an eye motif where they meet. A double tree of life meeting at an eye is a composition we have not seen on another rug. The drawing is the weaver’s own: hooked leaves, blossoms set in hexagonal frames, small combs and birds tucked into the ground, none of it worked from a pattern.
The colour is what sets it apart. A saturated apricot-orange and a soft aubergine sit on an indigo so deep it reads as black, with sage, ivory and rust in the flowers, and the orange drifts from apricot to rust from one motif to the next. The aubergine is a colour rarely seen on village work of this period.
The wool is exceptionally soft and lustrous, with a sheen that shows across the whole surface, and the pile is full and even across the whole rug, unusually so for a piece of its age. It is knotted on cotton warps, the selvedges and fringes are the ones it was woven with, and it has never needed repair.
At 270 by 116cm it suits a hallway, a study or a bedside, and it is a piece to live with for a long time. View it in our Richmond gallery, or explore more antique and vintage Persian rugs.
SPECIFICATIONS
How it sits in your room.
270 × 116 CM (8'10" × 3'10"), DRAWN TO SCALE WITH TYPICAL AUSTRALIAN FURNITURE SIZES.
Small beside a 3-seater sofa. It suits a reading corner, under an armchair or across an entry better than a sofa setting.
Only 18 cm of rug would show beyond even a four-seat table, so the chairs would sit off it. This one belongs in a living room or bedroom.
Under the lower part of a queen bed with 59 cm of rug showing on each side, so your feet land on it either side of the bed.
Measure the room, or just the area the rug should cover, and we will draw this rug in it to scale.
