Vintage Shahsavan Persian Runner Rug
ABOUT THIS PIECE
Handwoven from high-quality handspun sheep wool, Shahsavan rugs are geometrically patterned textiles made by the Shahsavan tribe, a large nomadic pastoralist group mostly in Northwestern Iran and also central regions of the country. This mountainous region is home to a number of smaller tribes from various backgrounds, accordingly, the diverse weaving traditions came together to form an impressive new rug grouping.
Shahsavan weavings are distinguished by highly geometric design work and an array of vibrant natural dyes. Rectangular medallions are frequently aligned horizontally or vertically across the field, with smaller improvised motifs adorning the background. It is also common to see all-over patterns in the field, especially among runners.
“Shahsavan” means “those who love the Shah (king)”.
