ABOUT THIS PIECE

Finely Handwoven in the famous weaving centre of Bijar, west Persia. Handwoven from fine local handspun wool using all-natural dyes and on a durable cotton foundation. This rug features a Mahi (fish) design, symbolising fish swimming around in a pond.

Bijar rugs are often to as “Iron rugs”, due to their fine weave and reputation for durability. To produce these carpets, a very thick weft is repeatedly inserted into the carpet foundation in addition to one or two thin wefts. By beating the knots of the carpet with the iron comb, the carpet’s foundation becomes more steady.

The design of Bijar carpets mainly includes orderly motifs, and compared to its rural type; they have softer lines and more natural motifs. classical Iranian motifs are magnified next to the patterns influenced by rural and tribal models. These carpets, which have remarkable charm, have an unexpectedly delicate texture, and originality and simplicity are evident in their design and colours.
