ABOUT THIS PIECE
This charming antique vintage Sirjan Afshar double Toranj carpet has been handwoven by Afshar nomads inhabiting the mountains of Kerman province, central Persia.
Woven from fine sustainably sourced local handspun wool and natural dyes, Afshar carpets are famous for their unique designs and durable construction.
Hand-knotted in the Sirjan district in 1350 SH (1971–72 CE), this Heshmat Persian rug displays a vivid terracotta-madder field anchored by a bold indigo medallion with ivory and burgundy accents. Four stylised rosette corner devices with latch-hook arms balance the open composition, framed by a meandering vine border of blossoms and palmettes. The piece is woven in lustrous wool pile on sturdy cotton warps, with supple red wool wefts visible in the back. Natural dyes provide a rich palette of madder reds, deep indigo blues, and warm golden-orange highlights, with the date “۱۳۵۰” and a probable weaver’s name adding historical authenticity. Well-preserved with full pile, this early 1970s collectible Persian carpet offers cultural depth and decorative impact, ideal for living rooms, dining areas, or discerning rug collections.
Nomadic carpets are unique pieces of art, handwoven over many years through improvisation and reference to folk iconography specific to each region and using fine, locally sourced and handspun wool. Nomadic carpets often depict an aerial view abstraction of the weaver’s pastoral nomadic life and their place in the universe, featuring many animals, people and plants and fields.
SPECIFICATIONS
How it sits in your room.
234 × 169 CM (7'8" × 5'7"), DRAWN TO SCALE WITH TYPICAL AUSTRALIAN FURNITURE SIZES.
About the length of a 3-seater sofa, so it sits just in front of it with the coffee table on it. Floated like this it reads as a deliberate island rather than a rug that came up short.
The chairs sit on the rug at the table, but with 45 cm of rug beyond the table their back legs catch the edge when pulled out. 60 cm is the comfortable margin.
Under the lower part of a double bed with 48 cm of rug showing on each side, so your feet land on it either side of the bed.
Measure the room, or just the area the rug should cover, and we will draw this rug in it to scale.
