Fine Nain 6 La Persian Rug Medallion & Islimi Scrollwork, c. 1980s
ABOUT THIS PIECE
Handwoven from high-quality handspun wool on a durable cotton foundation, In Nain, central Persia.
Since the early 1930s, skilled artisans have woven rugs of high density in the town of Nain, often more than one million knots per square meter. These rugs are famous for their soft and calming colour palette of ivory and complementing khaki or sky blues. Nain rugs are nearly always composed of high-quality and soft wool piles with ivory highlights of silk. Patterns with a medallion in the middle, together with arabesques and floral motifs are common. Nain carpet designs are similar to rugs of the neighbouring city of Isfahan but are identifiable by their stunning pastel colour palette of ivory.
This refined Nain 6 La Persian rug, is a fine example of late 20th-century workshop weaving from the city of Nain. Its design centres on a delicately drawn, multi-pointed medallion encircled by scrolling islimi arabesques, lotus palmettes, and finely detailed floral sprays. The deep midnight-blue field contrasts elegantly with an ivory and soft golden palette, accented by sky blue and rich burgundy highlights. An ivory border of continuous vine and blossom frames the composition with classical balance. Hand-knotted in fine wool with silk highlights on a cotton foundation, the rug displays the crisp clarity characteristic of 6 La quality, with a weave of 50 Raj. In excellent condition with a full, even pile, this piece combines collectible finesse with the durability suited to a formal reception room, private office, or select collector’s setting.
SPECIFICATIONS
How it sits in your room.
195 × 123 CM (6'5" × 4'), DRAWN TO SCALE WITH TYPICAL AUSTRALIAN FURNITURE SIZES.
About the length of a 3-seater sofa, so it sits just in front of it with the coffee table on it. Floated like this it reads as a deliberate island rather than a rug that came up short.
Only 22 cm of rug would show beyond even a four-seat table, so the chairs would sit off it. This one belongs in a living room or bedroom.
Only 21 cm of rug would show either side of a queen bed. It works, but 45 cm or more looks settled. At the foot of the bed it suits well.
Measure the room, or just the area the rug should cover, and we will draw this rug in it to scale.
