Vintage Moqan Shahsavan Persian Soumak Rug
ABOUT THIS PIECE
Using high-quality handspun sheep wool, Shahsavan rugs are geometrically patterned handwoven textiles made by the Shahsavan tribe, a large nomadic pastoralist group mostly in Northwestern Iran and also central regions of the country. This mountainous region is home to a number of smaller tribes from various backgrounds, accordingly, the diverse weaving traditions came together to form an impressive new rug grouping.
Shahsavan weavings are distinguished by highly geometric design work and an array of vibrant natural dyes. Rectangular medallions are frequently aligned horizontally or vertically across the field, with smaller improvised motifs adorning the background. It is also common to see all-over patterns in the field, especially among runners.
“Shahsavan” means “those who love the Shah (king)”.
SPECIFICATIONS
How it sits in your room.
175 × 120 CM (5'9" × 3'11"), DRAWN TO SCALE WITH TYPICAL AUSTRALIAN FURNITURE SIZES.
Small beside a 3-seater sofa. It suits a reading corner, under an armchair or across an entry better than a sofa setting.
Only 20 cm of rug would show beyond even a four-seat table, so the chairs would sit off it. This one belongs in a living room or bedroom.
Narrower than a queen bed, so it sits across the foot of the bed, tucked 20 cm under. A pair of runners either side is the other way to dress a bed this size.
Measure the room, or just the area the rug should cover, and we will draw this rug in it to scale.
