ABOUT THIS PIECE
Handwoven by Qashqai nomads of southwestern Persia.
Traditionally woven for the weavers’ own use as a thick floor covering for winter months or as sleeping rugs, Gabbehs are unique one of a kind pieces of art handwoven by nomads of the Zagros mountains.
Gabbehs exhibit some of the most original and unique designs within Persian rugs, with simple fields of colours, checkered designs and symbols and motifs of flora and fauna. With their minimal design elements, they are perfectly suited for modern interiors. Additionally, they can be easily incorporated into most eclectic decorating schemes and work well with traditional Persian carpets. Most of the recent Gabbehs are filled with colour with the weaver’s creativity being given free rein. The beauty of these rugs is their unmistakable uniqueness.
This Qashqai Colourful Kheshti Persian Gabbeh presents a bold reinterpretation of the Kheshti tile design through a striking grid of coloured squares. Handwoven by Qashqai weavers in Fars Province, it maintains the traditional Gabbeh foundation with finely spun dark brown wool warps and three tightly packed yellow wool wefts. The weaving rhythm is distinctive, with two rows of knots secured before each set of three wefts, a method directly rooted in antique Gabbeh construction. Combining tribal authenticity with refined execution. The handspun wool pile is dyed with a natural palette of saffron yellow, madder red, sky blue, and fresh green, each softened by abrash that enhances depth and movement.
Handwoven, usually by women, on horizontal looms, Gabbehs are made from sustainably sourced local handspun wool and natural dyes and feature a thick, soft, lustrous pile.
