ABOUT THIS PIECE
From the Kuba (Quba) weaving district of the northeastern Caucasus, this Caucasian rug is a classic Quba rug example, hand knotted in wool on a wool foundation. A chain of hooked diamond medallions runs the length of the indigo field, flanked by lattice and cruciform motifs, all enclosed within a bold crab border. The composition balances village artistry with precise drawing, characteristic of fine Kuba rugs from the late 19th century. The palette is rich and harmonious: indigo blues, madder reds, straw yellow, teal, green from over-dye, and undyed ivory. All colours are derived from natural dyes, with soft abrash that adds depth and authenticity. This antique Caucasian carpet offers timeless appeal for collectors and designers, working equally well as a focal nomadic rug in a contemporary interior or as a treasured accent in a traditional space. Available exclusively from our Melbourne rug gallery.
