ABOUT THIS PIECE
This exceptional Qarabağ (Artsakh) carpet features the celebrated Gol Farang or “foreign flower” design, where naturalistic roses scatter across a warm terracotta field and a dark border blooms with endless floral sprays. Woven in the late 19th to early 20th century within an Armenian workshop, it bears a rare signature in Cyrillic reading ARSH beside a Christian cross, confirming its Artsakh origin. The foundation is cotton with a fine wool pile and the handle is firm yet supple. The palette is dominated by natural madder reds, indigo blues, over-dyed greens, golden yellows, and a vivid orange ground marked by strong abrash, with lilac tones achieved through traditional overdyeing. Condition is excellent, with original sides and fringes preserved. Collectors will value this as both a signed cultural document and one of the most beloved floral expressions of Caucasian weaving.
SPECIFICATIONS
How it sits in your room.
250 × 140 CM (8'2" × 4'7"), DRAWN TO SCALE WITH TYPICAL AUSTRALIAN FURNITURE SIZES.
Long enough for a 3-seater sofa but not deep enough to reach under its front legs as well as hold the coffee table, so it sits just in front with the table on it. Floated like this it reads as a deliberate island.
Only 30 cm of rug would show beyond even a four-seat table, so the chairs would sit off it. This one belongs in a living room or bedroom.
Under the lower part of a queen bed with 49 cm of rug showing on each side, so your feet land on it either side of the bed.
Measure the room, or just the area the rug should cover, and we will draw this rug in it to scale.
