ABOUT THIS PIECE
The weavers of Senneh, modern Sanandaj, were the aristocrats of Kurdish weaving. Their single-wefted rugs are instantly recognisable by the granular texture of the reverse, and they set a standard of fineness the rest of Kurdistan never matched. This example carries the classic Senneh field of boteh drawn in rows on ivory, each one articulated in miniature with its own flowering interior, framed by a terracotta border of rosettes and serrated leaves.
It was woven around 1890 to 1910 with natural dyes throughout. The dark outlines show the iron-mordant corrosion that collectors read as evidence of age, and our analysis measured the knot density at approximately 500,000 knots per square metre, which is exceptionally fine for the type. Our dye analysis documented the full natural palette, including layered indigo blues and a compound green of indigo over botanical yellow. The pile is evenly low, honest wear for a rug of this age, and the selvedges have been professionally secured. A genuine antique from the golden period of Senneh production, in the scatter format the town made famous.

SPECIFICATIONS
How it sits in your room.
196 × 135 CM (6'5" × 4'5"), DRAWN TO SCALE WITH TYPICAL AUSTRALIAN FURNITURE SIZES.
About the length of a 3-seater sofa, so it sits just in front of it with the coffee table on it. Floated like this it reads as a deliberate island rather than a rug that came up short.
Only 28 cm of rug would show beyond even a four-seat table, so the chairs would sit off it. This one belongs in a living room or bedroom.
Only 22 cm of rug would show either side of a queen bed. It works, but 45 cm or more looks settled. At the foot of the bed it suits well.
Measure the room, or just the area the rug should cover, and we will draw this rug in it to scale.
