ABOUT THIS PIECE
Handwoven by Khamse nomads and villagers of Zanjan, northwestern Persia.
Khamse carpets feature a unique combination of Northern and southern Zagros owing to the Khamse people originally migrating from Fars to Zanjan.
Woven from fine local handspun wool, on a durable cotton foundation, using fine dyes to achieve a beautiful unique Abrash colouring,
A highly desired quality, Abrash refers to when different shades of the same colour are present on a carpet, revealing expert use of dyes and small scale manufacturing of the carpet.
Nomadic carpets are unique pieces of art, handwoven over many years through improvisation and reference to folk iconography specific to each region and using fine locally sourced and handspun wool. Nomadic carpets often depict an aerial view abstraction of the weaver’s pastoral nomadic life and their place in the universe, featuring many animals, people and plants and fields
