ABOUT THIS PIECE
The Neyriz SeKale carpet offers a tangible connection to the rich history of the Afshar tribes, nomadic peoples from the Neyriz region located east of Shiraz by the Bakhtegan Lake. This semi-antique piece is a unique masterpiece, hand-knotted and steeped in the diverse cultural influences that have shaped this area, including the Lurs, Turks, Arabs, and Afshars. Its age adds a layer of depth and character, telling a silent story of decades past.
What truly sets the Neyriz SeKale apart is its captivating aesthetic, characterized by a vibrant and lively colouration. Despite this vividness, a distinctive depth of tone permeates these Afshari rugs, creating a rich and nuanced visual experience that is both bold and grounding. The blues and reds in particular, as seen in this piece, showcase the remarkable range and intensity of the dyes used, beautifully mellowed by time.
The intricate design, featuring stylized birds and goats, is more than just a beautiful pattern; it’s a profound expression of ancient symbolism. These motifs are believed to represent a plea for rain, a vital element in the nomadic way of life. The prominent goat motif further reinforces this theme of rain-seeking, while the depiction of trees symbolizes blessing, life, and eternity.
SPECIFICATIONS
How it sits in your room.
200 × 137 CM (6'7" × 4'6"), DRAWN TO SCALE WITH TYPICAL AUSTRALIAN FURNITURE SIZES.
About the length of a 3-seater sofa, so it sits just in front of it with the coffee table on it. Floated like this it reads as a deliberate island rather than a rug that came up short.
Only 29 cm of rug would show beyond even a four-seat table, so the chairs would sit off it. This one belongs in a living room or bedroom.
Only 24 cm of rug would show either side of a queen bed. It works, but 45 cm or more looks settled. At the foot of the bed it suits well.
Measure the room, or just the area the rug should cover, and we will draw this rug in it to scale.
