ABOUT THIS PIECE
Masterfully handwoven, using horizontal looms, by the Torkaman nomads of northeastern Persia, all natural dye and 100% handspun sheep wool. In Torkaman’s carpets, only thin weft is used for the foundation of the carpets making them more pliable, soft and pleasant and since they live in cold regions, their carpets are polished thickly with long piles. Passed down through generations, one of the most notable aspects of Torkaman carpet designs is that each tribe has its own motifs derived from its environment, history and beliefs depicted in elaborate abstract forms. In this carpet, we see an iteration of the Boteh motif which is an abstraction of the Sarv tree (cypress) symbolizing eternity and endurance.
