ABOUT THIS PIECE
A vintage Fars Persian gabbeh rug, hand-knotted in natural undyed wool on a wool foundation around 1950 to 1975, with three linked medallions on an ivory field.
Hooked outlines give each diamond medallion a strong silhouette, and small rosettes are scattered across their camel centres, drawn a little differently in each. A pole links the three down the length of the field, stepped half-medallions reach in from both sides, and narrow borders of hooked S-shapes and small crosses frame it all.
Every colour here is the natural colour of the wool: ivory, camel, mid and dark brown and a little grey, with no dye at all. Spared the dye bath, the wool stays soft, and the ivory shifts gently across the field where one batch of fleece gave way to the next.
Gabbehs are the thick-piled rugs that the tribes of the Zagros mountains, the Qashqai and Lori among them in Fars, weave for their own floors. This one is built that way, on dark wool warps that show in the fringes, with bindings of light and dark wool along the long edges.
The pile is full and even across the whole rug, the edges are the ones it was woven with, and it has never needed repair.
At 135 by 240cm it works beside a bed, beneath a coffee table or in a generous hallway. View it in our Richmond gallery, or explore more vintage Persian rugs.
SPECIFICATIONS
How it sits in your room.
240 × 135 CM (7'10" × 4'5"), DRAWN TO SCALE WITH TYPICAL AUSTRALIAN FURNITURE SIZES.
Long enough for a 3-seater sofa but not deep enough to reach under its front legs as well as hold the coffee table, so it sits just in front with the table on it. Floated like this it reads as a deliberate island.
Only 28 cm of rug would show beyond even a four-seat table, so the chairs would sit off it. This one belongs in a living room or bedroom.
Under the lower part of a double bed with 51 cm of rug showing on each side, so your feet land on it either side of the bed.
Measure the room, or just the area the rug should cover, and we will draw this rug in it to scale.
