ABOUT THIS PIECE
This Sirjan Afshar pictorial carpet combines a partial flatweave with a partial pile weave, skillfully handwoven by Afshar nomads residing in the mountains of the Kerman province in central Persia. Crafted from exceptionally fine, sustainably sourced local handspun wool and adorned with natural dyes, Afshar carpets are renowned for their distinctive designs and robust construction.
Nomadic carpets are unique pieces of art, handwoven over many years through improvisation and reference to folk iconography specific to each region and using fine locally sourced and handspun wool. Nomadic carpets often depict an aerial view abstraction of the weaver’s pastoral nomadic life and their place in the universe, featuring many animals, people and plants and fields.
