ABOUT THIS PIECE

Handwoven by Qashqai Nomads in southern Iran, Mafrash (blanket box) is a boxy bag traditionally used to store bedding blankets and clothes in nomad tents. It is also used as a cushion or seat since they become squishy and comfortable after being filled. These functional colourful handcrafts offer a variety of benefits to modern interior design due to their shape and design. For example, They can be used as a distinctive ottoman, a beautiful extra seat or even a small coffee table when filled with bedding and linen.

These unique artful pieces are handwoven on horizontal looms from local sheep’s wool and are typically woven using the intricate Soumak/Souzani technique and dyed with natural colours. The motifs of mafrashs are passed down through generations and vary between clans and tribes.
