ABOUT THIS PIECE

Handwoven by Qashqai Nomads in southern Iran.

Mafrash is a boxy bag traditionally used to store bedding blankets and clothes in nomad tents. It is also used as a cushion or seat since they become squishy and comfortable after being filled. These functional colourful handcrafts offer a variety of benefits to modern interior design due to their shape and design. For example, They can be used as a distinctive ottoman, a beautiful extra seat or even a small coffee table when filled with bedding and linen.

These unique artful pieces are handwoven on horizontal looms from local sheep’s wool and are typically woven using the intricate Sumac/Souzani technique and dyed with natural colours. The motifs of mafrashs are passed down through generations and vary between clans and tribes.

Nomadic storage boxes Made by the nomads of south-western Persia, These vesa-tile woolen boxes are used both as furniture and storage around the tents by the nomades. Craft-ed from hand-spun, hand-dyed wool and bound by natural leath-er, each of our boxes has been sourced from decades-old col-lections, showing unique signs of age and detail.
