ABOUT THIS PIECE
The Soumak Kilim, also called Shiraki-Pich, Verni is a unique handwoven textile that combines the features of kilims and carpets. Unlike flat-woven kilims, it uses a technique where weft threads are wrapped around warp threads in a continuous, non-interlocking manner, creating a raised, textured surface. This allows for intricate, carpet-like patterns. Woven on a traditional loom, it typically features cotton or wool warps and wefts of wool, silk, or a blend, depending on regional traditions. Its single-sided design, similar to carpets, results from excess weft threads being carried to the back, leaving the front detailed.
Renowned for its durability, the Soumak Kilim is sturdier than many kilims, with no gaps or holes. It serves as both a beautiful floor covering and a material for functional items like saddlebags or bedding wraps. Combining artistry, strength, and cultural heritage, it is a timeless and versatile addition to any space.
