ABOUT THIS PIECE
In Shiraz Gabbehs, a free perception of the weaver’s environment determines the central theme. The design of these eye-catching rugs is straightforward and graphic, with only a few decorative elements, mostly rectangular, as sometimes seen in modern art.
Traditionally woven for the weavers’ own use as a thick floor covering for winter months or as sleeping rugs, Gabbehs are pieces of art handwoven by nomads of the Zagros mountains.
Gabbehs exhibit some of the most original and unique designs within Persian rugs, with simple fields of colours, checkered designs and symbols and motifs of flora and fauna. With their minimal design elements, they are perfectly suited for modern interiors. Additionally, they can be easily incorporated into most eclectic decorating schemes and work well with traditional Persian carpets. Most of the recent Gabbehs are filled with colour with the weaver’s creativity being given free rein. The beauty of these rugs is their unmistakable uniqueness.
Handwoven, usually by women, on horizontal looms, Gabbehs are made from sustainably sourced local handspun wool and natural dyes and feature a thick, soft, lustrous pile.
