ABOUT THIS PIECE
Handwoven by Qashqai nomads of southwestern Persia, this kilim features a foundation made from durable goat wool, a traditional material prized for its strength and resilience.
Qashqai nomadic rugs are unique, one-of-a-kind pieces of art, handwoven through a blend of improvisation and reference to rich folk iconography. Woven on horizontal looms, Qashqai kilims are crafted using sustainably sourced, locally handspun wool and natural dyes. Often abstracting an aerial view of the weaver’s nomadic life, these rugs feature stylized depictions of animals, people, plants, and pastoral scenes.
The weaving techniques of the Qashqai and, more broadly, the textile traditions of the Fars region are recognized by UNESCO as part of the world’s intangible cultural heritage.
Kilims are a distinctive type of rug typically made using interweaving rather than knotting, resulting in a flat-woven surface rather than a pile. Qashqai kilims showcase some of the most original and striking designs in Persian weaving, often featuring bold color fields, geometric patterns, and motifs drawn from nature. With their minimal yet expressive design, they complement a wide range of interiors.
