ABOUT THIS PIECE
An antique Zanjan Persian rug from north-west Persia, hand-knotted in wool on cotton in the early 20th century, with a navy medallion and corners on a camel field.
A hexagonal navy medallion with serrated edges sits at the centre of a camel field, with matching navy spandrels in the corners, the lachak toranj layout of the region. The medallion and the field are filled with small rosettes, flowering sprigs and paired figures in apricot, ivory, brown and a greyed teal, and the main border carries a floral meander on navy between narrow guards.
The colour is unusual for a Zanjan. Camel and apricot carry the field where red would be expected, and every colour drifts: the navy runs from deep to grey-blue across the rug, the camel is mottled knot to knot, and the orange moves from terracotta to pale apricot from one motif to the next. That drift comes of small hand-dyed lots, and the whole palette is soft and greyed, with nothing sharp anywhere in it.
The wool is lustrous and the pile is full and even across the whole rug. It is knotted on cotton warps, the selvedges and fringes are the ones it was woven with, and it has never needed repair.
At 280 by 135cm it suits a hallway, a study or the foot of a bed. View it in our Richmond gallery, or explore more antique and vintage Persian rugs.
SPECIFICATIONS
How it sits in your room.
280 × 135 CM (9'2" × 4'5"), DRAWN TO SCALE WITH TYPICAL AUSTRALIAN FURNITURE SIZES.
Long enough for a 3-seater sofa but not deep enough to reach under its front legs as well as hold the coffee table, so it sits just in front with the table on it. Floated like this it reads as a deliberate island.
Only 28 cm of rug would show beyond even a four-seat table, so the chairs would sit off it. This one belongs in a living room or bedroom.
Under the lower part of a king bed with 49 cm of rug showing on each side, so your feet land on it either side of the bed.
Measure the room, or just the area the rug should cover, and we will draw this rug in it to scale.
