How to Place Rugs in Your Home?

You probably have experienced how challenging choosing the right rug is for each home space and how much a wrong choice could be regretful. Often, it is because many issues like colour, pattern, size, placement, and material of the rug come into play and make decision-making difficult. But the good news is that you don’t need an interior designer to make your home more desirable. If you follow a few rules, you can safely choose your floor coverings on your own. So, we provide some formulas, rules, and general “no no’s” that can help (and also some shoppable picks).

The first and primary point for any space is that the size and placement of the rug should be prioritised. Then go to the design, pattern and material. Our experience shows that it is very instrumental to visualise the size of your rug at home. A handy way to do it is to use painter’s tape on the floor. Thus, you will be clear between different sizes and placements and can quickly go for the design of your rug. Now let’s go and explain some rules.

Living Room

Choosing the right rug for the living room is the hardest, but since it will be the focal point of your living room, choosing the right one will be well worth your time.

Keep in mind that the shape of your living room, not just the furniture, should dictate the size and orientation of the rug to make the space appear larger and more connected. Rectangles and squares are generally better, as circular rugs make your room feel smaller.

In terms of design, when choosing a living room rug, there is so much freedom and fun. You could choose a rug with tones that complement your existing palette or go for something bolder to contrast the room. A quality rug gives character and unifies the entire living room all at once!

Keep in mind placement of your rug can make or break the space, and because the living room is where you do most of your relaxing and entertaining, be careful not to cross placement red lines.

All Legs on Board: Unified space for every piece

If you have a large room, placing all the furniture pieces on the rug is one of the best layouts. In such placement make sure you give yourself at least 20 cm from the edge of your furniture to the edge of your rug, so that your furniture does not look like a child is near the edge of a subway platform! Another critical point is that the edge of your rug should be at least 25 cm away from the wall. The worst layout is to spread floor-coverings from wall to wall; you will feel that the space is cramped and the home is suffocating. And do not run a rug under an entertainment unit (eg TV). The tendency is to make a warm space for family and friends conversation.

Common rug sizes for this type of layout are 12m2 and 9m2. You can go with every design that feet your taste and room palette. Be brave in living rooms!

Front Legs Only: keep connected as well as furniture individuality

This is the most popular format as it is very flexible and makes your room look slightly bigger. Here, you want all furniture grouped together, but simultaneously, give individuality to each of your furniture pieces and spaces. For the layout, you should set the front legs of your sofa and other seats on the rug. Note that the rug should run below the couch one-third two-third of its width. Never cut your couch in half. If your seat is 45cm, ensure 15cm of the rug is under it or 30 cm.

Common sizes for front legs only layout are: 4.5m2 6m2 9m2.

Float: Break the rules

In the float layout, your rug is placed exclusively beneath your coffee table. While this is often considered a design mistake, many people still prefer this layout and it can certainly work well in certain situations. For instance, if you have a smaller living room and want to create the impression of more space, this layout can be pretty effective. Additionally, it can be a great way to showcase a small, valuable rug that you want to incorporate into your décor.

If you do choose to use this layout, it’s important to keep in mind that the rug should be positioned a reasonable distance away from your sofa. We recommend no more than 20 centimeters of space between the rug and the sofa. By following this guideline, you can ensure that your space looks stylish and well put-together.

Note that this layout depends on your coffee-table size. Common sizes are: 2m2 3m2 4.5m2 6m2.

Dining Room

The placement and size of the dining room rug are a rule of thumb but require precision and accurate measurement. The rug should be of a size that when the chairs are pulled out from all four sides, some of it still extends behind the seat. In fact, it should not be so that when someone pulls a chair out, the chair legs get stuck on the edge of the rug. For this purpose, consider the rug size 60 to 80 cm larger than the table’s edges. A smaller rug sounds detached, and a larger one looks slack.

The obvious point in choosing dining room rugs is to use short pile and durable rugs as they are easier to vacuum and hard to wear in high-traffic rooms.

Common sizes are 6m2 9m2 12m2. consider Afshar, Bijar, …. for their durability. Couldn’t find your accurate size? You can order your Persian carpet in custom size in Dyad Artisan using Bespoke sourcing, ……..

Bedroom

In the bedroom, what determines the size and placement of the rug is how the bed, the focal point of the room, should be framed. You also want the luxury of a comfy rug under your feet when you go to bed or wake up. For this purpose, there are three popular layouts: whole legs, one-third, and runner-up.

Whole Legs: Classic

all the bed legs and two nightstands should be placed on the rug. Remember that unrelated furniture, such as the dresser, must be off the rug. We suggest the rug spills out 50 to 70 cm from the edge of the bed for comfort and aesthetics. If you could, don’t let the rug encroach on any main path.

Common sizes are 9m2 and 12m2

One-third: modern look

One-third has a more modern look. In this style, two-thirds of the rug should be placed under the bed, and the edge of the rug should be 20 to 30cm away from the nightstands. For a symmetrical finish, the best rug size is a 2×3 rug for queen beds and a 2.5×3.5 rug for king-size beds. This style is the most preferred as the beds usually lean back to the wall, and you don’t want your rug to stick to the wall as a general rule.

As mentioned 6m2 and 9m2 are perfect.

Runner-up: spots of pleasure

Do you love runners? Small runners totally work for you even in bedrooms. These flexible choices work for spaces and beds of all sizes, especially if walls flank your bed. Scales are essential for this style. The runners shouldn’t extend the footboard edge and should be a bit wider than your nightstands.

Common sizes you can go with are 1m2 , 1.5m2 and 1m<m2.
